Hello. I’m Matt Thorusen. Life is amazing! But it has not always been that way.
I grew up in a low-income divorced family. At the ripe age of 19 I decided to join the United States Marine Corps. I figured all my friends were doing it and I needed to get to college somehow. I became an M1A1 Main Battle Tank technician while I was in active duty.
Once I returned from war, I took time to heal. During this process I discovered that I wanted to help others heal like I did. This led me to get a Bachelor’s in Sociology from BSU. I was then fast tracked into Northwest Nazarene University’s Master of Social Work program two months after my Bachelor’s degree.
Helping others walk through their life appears to be a god-given purpose. I have been able to be with others in their most difficult journeys.
I now enjoy being an LCSW! I live with my wonderful wife who is a teacher. She has been through her own trauma and was able to get her Master’s Degree in teaching at the same time I received my Bachelor’s. We enjoy camping and spending time outdoors together to include big game hunting.
My passion includes waterfowl hunting and seeing others come out of their trials and tribulations better than they went in.
My approach when working with the client is person-centered. This involves understanding what the client is looking to gain through a professional therapeutic relationship. Understanding that the client has hopes and desires that may need to be addressed, I use a Trans-Theoretical approach to include Strengths-Based, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Trauma-Informed Care. The client will be able to understand that they are a unique and valuable member of the therapeutic relationship and treatment.
